Quercus ×sternbergii Lübbert ex Lamant & Coombes. Common name: Sternberg's Oak. Phenology: Apr; Sep-Oct (of the second year) Habitat: Dry woodlands, scrub woodlands, and forests over chalk, limestone, and calcareous clays. Distribution: C. Texas to Oklahoma, where Q. buckleyi and Q. shumardii come into contact along a narrow zone spanning the Balcones and White Rock escarpments and adjacent areas.
ID notes: This taxon is generally neatly intermediate between its parents in tree size, lobing, leaf pubescence, and acorn characters. It typically presents as a medium-sized tree with somewhat prominent hair tufts in the vein axils and inhabits chalk or limestone woodlands where it can be locally dominant in such communities, especially in sites where conditions are less preferable for either of the parents.
