*Canavalia ensiformis (Linnaeus) A.P. de Candolle. Common name: Jackbean, Wonderbean. Phenology: Jun. Habitat: Disturbed areas. Distribution: Native of tropical America.
Origin/Endemic status: Neotropics
Taxonomy Comments: Sauer (1964) described this species as "a prehistoric American Indian domesticate, found archaeologically at various sites in the southwestern United States, most abundantly since 1300 A.D." and additionally stated that "all available collections with habitat data are either from cultivation or apparently feral escapes in artificial habitats". This suggests the possibility that C. ensiformis is a cultigen selected for large seeds, presumably from stock of C. brasiliensis.
