Intro: Erect, tufted perennial of shaded cliff bases, usually under overhangs, on grotto floors, behind waterfalls where humidity is high (but not in the spray zone), in rock houses of the Cumberland Plateau, nearly always in deeply shaded situations where little or no direct sunlight falls.

Stems: Flowering stems unbranched, leafless, spreading-hairy.

Leaves: Leaves basal, on hairy petioles, round to kidney-shaped with notched base, 1-5 in. long, palmately divided into broadly rounded and toothed lobes, sometimes velvety-hairy beneath or furry above and reddish beneath.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in a narrow, loose terminal panicle; less than 1/4 in. wide; white to pink; consisting of 5 minute petals attached to a tiny, white-hairy conical calyx tube and 5 protruding stamens.

Fruits: Fruit a round to oval capsule with 2 persistent styles.
