Geum rivale Linnaeus. Common name: Water Avens, Purple Avens. Phenology: May-Jun. Habitat: Calcareous fens, swamps, seepages, and wet meadows. Distribution: Circumboreal, in North America from NL (Labrador), Keewatin, and BC south to NJ, MD, WV (Pocahontas, Preston, Randolph, and Tucker counties), OH, IN, IL, MN, SD, NM, and WA.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: In our region, the closest relative to Geum rivale is the narrow Southern Appalachian G. geniculatum.

Synonymy : = C, Can, F, FNA9, G, GrPl, Il, K4, Mi, NE, NY, Pa, WV, Bolle (1933). Basionym: Geum rivale L. 1753
