Matelea decipiens (Alexander) Woodson. Common name: Deceptive Spinypod. Phenology: Apr-Jul (-Sep); Jun-Oct. Habitat: Woodlands and thickets, generally over calcareous substrates. Distribution: S. IL, c. MO, and se. KS south to LA and e. TX. Previous reported distribution eastwards in VA south to nc. GA and ne. MS appears to represent variability within M. caroliniensis (Fishbein & McDonnell 2023).
