Crocanthemum canadense (Linnaeus) Britton. Common name: Canada Frostweed, Canada Sunrose, Canada Rockrose. Phenology: Apr-Jun (chasm.), May-Aug (cleist.); Jun-Oct. Habitat: Fields, woodlands, forest edges, roadsides, disturbed areas. Distribution: NS and ME west to MI and MN, south to e. GA, e. AL, e. TN, KY, and MO.

Intro: Erect perennial of fields, woodlands, forest edges, roadsides and other disturbed areas.

Stems: Stems unbranched or narrowly branched at flowering time, green or purplish-brown and slightly hairy.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, short-petiolate to subsessile, narrowly oval, 3/4-1 1/2 in. long, densely hairy on beneath and less hairy above.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers single (rarely 2) at stem tips, yellow, 3/4-1 1/4 inch wide, with 5 petals and 10 or more orange-tipped stamens; later in the season, tight clusters of petal-less, self-pollinating flowers develop in leaf axils and at tips of branches.

Fruits: Fruit an oval capsule.
