Sarracenia purpurea Linnaeus var. purpurea . Northern Purple Pitcherplant. Phen: Apr-May; Jun-Jul. Hab: Bogs. Dist: The species as a whole is widespread in e. North America, the only Sarracenia to extend north of se. VA. Var. purpurea ranges from NL (Labrador) to NT and BC, south to NJ, DE, e. MD, w. MD (where not native), ne. VA, e. WV (where not native), OH, IN, IL, MN, and WA.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: A nomenclatural battle about the application of the typic variety has been resolved, with var. purpurea applying to the northern variety (Reveal 1993, Cheek 1994, Kartesz & Gandhi 1995, Cheek 2001).
