Elatine minima (Nuttall) Fischer & C.A. Meyer. Common name: Tiny Waterwort. Phenology: Jul-Oct. Habitat: Tidal flats, lakes, mud flats, pools on granite flatrocks. Distribution: First found in NC in 1990, E. minima is widespread in ne. United States, south to VA, NC, and SC (Horn, pers. comm., 2004). The only known site for this species in NC is the spillway of an artificial lake (Lake Butner, Granville County); it is uncertain whether it should be considered native or exotic in NC. It may have been introduced by waterfowl or humans.
