Habitat: Found growing in mildly acid to strongly acid soils of mixed deciduous forests on bluffs, slopes, and stream banks, particularly those with north or northeast-facing aspect and also in level ground around small intermittent or small order streams without significant sediment deposition during flooding. Distribution: In central Alabama in the Central Uplands of the Northern Piedmont extending into the Valley and Ridge and the Warrior Basin of the Cumberland Plateau; in wc., c. and nc. Georgia in the Piedmont and lower elevations of the Blue Ridge; at elevations of 250-725 m.
