Astragalus

not marked as a favorite taxon Astragalus gracilis Nuttall. Common name: Slender Milkvetch. Phenology: Apr-Jul. Habitat: Calcareous soils, in prairies or juniper savannas. Distribution: North Dakota, Saskatchewan, and Montana south to sc. Oklahoma, Panhandle Texas, and c. New Mexico.

ID notes: In our region, this species is recognized by its slender stems and narrow elongating raceme. The only other Astragalus species in our region that shares the very slender aspect is A. michauxii, which only occurs east of the Mississippi River. The distinctive boat-shaped legumes also distinguish A. gracilis from all other species in our region.
