Distribution: Primarily an Appalachian species: NY and s. ON south to n. GA (Jones & Coile 1988) and AL; disjunct in the Interior Highlands of AR.

Flowers: Flowers dangle in small clusters from leaf axils; pale-yellow to greenish-yellow; 1-2 in. wide; bell-shaped and consisting of 6 pointed tepals, 6 dangling stamens with yellow anthers and a long style.
Fruits: Fruit a smooth, bright orange to red, oval berry.
