not marked as a favorite taxon Anemone virginiana Linnaeus var. virginiana. Common name: Tall Anemone, Thimbleweed. Phenology: May-Aug. Habitat: Rich forests and woodlands, prairies, especially prevalent on circumneutral soils. Distribution: Newfoundland and Labrador (Newfoundland), Maine, s. Ontario, and Saskatchewan, south to Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Wyoming.

Intro: Erect perennial found in rich forests and rocky woodlands, especially on circumneutral soils.

Stems: Stems solitary, loosely hairy.

Leaves: Leaves basal and a whorl or 2 of similarly shaped leaves toward top of stem, below the flower scapes; palmately divided into 3- (sometimes 5-) parted, toothed, lance-shaped and hairy segments with purple stalks.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers solitary on 2 or more hairy, terminal scapes; white, to 1 1/2 in. wide, consisting of 5 petal-like sepals encircling a green, bristly, cone-shaped compound ovary and ring of bushy stamens.

Fruits: Fruit a thimble-shaped cluster of brownish achenes.
