not marked as a favorite taxon *Perilla scabra (Thunberg) Bo Li & C.L. Xiang. Common name: Mosla, Mini-shiso. Phenology: Aug-Sep. Habitat: Disturbed areas. Distribution: Native of e. Asia. This species is becoming a noxious weed in Kentucky, Tennessee, w. North Carolina, and other parts of the Southeastern United States; it should be expected to become more widespread in our region.

Taxonomy Comments: All or most of our material in North America appears to conform best to Perilla scabra (sensu stricto), but the characters used in previous keys are not very diagnostic. It is possible that Perilla dianthera and Perilla scabra should be combined as a single taxon, in which case Perilla scabra has nomenclatural priority. For now, we use the name Perilla scabra as the most likely correct outcome to this combined taxonomic and identification uncertainty.
