Horticultural Information

Intro: Erect annual from a taproot, found on roadsides, fields and other disturbed areas. Native of Eurasia.

Stems: Stems branched, covered in cobwebby hairs, becoming smooth later.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, petiolate (lower) and sessile-clasping (upper), lance-shaped, 1-4 in. long, wavy margined to pinnately lobed (irregular, jagged lobes) and with margins curved downward, somewhat fleshy, smooth or hairy.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Compousite flowers (heads) in dense, terminal clusters on short stalks; heads cylindric, about 1/3 in. long, consisting of many tiny, yellow, tubular disk florets (no ray florets). Hairless, green, linear bracts with black tips tightly surround the head.

Fruits: Fruit a tufted, slender achene.
