Glossary (beta!)

Origin/Endemic status: Europe

Taxonomy Comments: Recognition of this species has been controversial, especially when using morphological species concepts. C. rubella Reuter, Pink Shepherd's Purse, has sometimes distinguished (as by F, G, Stace 2010), and occurs in our area. It is diploid (vs. tetraploid), has pink petals 1-2 mm long (vs. white, 2-3 mm long), and lateral margins of the fruit concave (vs. straight to convex). Al-Shehbaz (1986) considered the character correlations to be poor, not warranting taxonomic recognition. Careful study has revealed that it should be accorded species rank (Guo et al. 2009).
