not marked as a favorite taxon Bulbostylis coarctata (Elliott) Fernald. Common name: Elliott's Hairsedge. Phenology: Jul-Oct. Habitat: Longleaf pine sandhills, usually associated with longleaf pine and wiregrass. Distribution: Se. VA south to s. FL and west to e. and c. TX, north in the interior to sw. TN; Cuba.

ID notes: Bulbostylis coarctata is very similar to B. ciliatifolia, but its stems are taller, achenes are smaller (0.6-0.7 mm long vs. 0.8-0.9 mm), and it occupies drier microhabitats.

Taxonomy Comments: The broad sympatry of this taxon and B. ciliatifolia suggests that they are best recognized as species. Kral (1971) lumped Stenophyllus carteri here without comment or discussion; a reevaluation may be warranted.
