Pyxidanthera barbulata Michaux var. barbulata. Common name: Savanna Pyxiemoss, Common Pyxiemoss, Big Pyxie. Phenology: Mar-Apr; May-Jun. Habitat: Pine savannas, pine flatwoods, pocosin margins, edges of sandhill seepage bogs, primarily in mesic to hydric sites, in wet sands and peaty sands, occasionally extending to submesic sands, but generally with a permanently or seasonally high water table, often with Sphagnum. Distribution: NY (Long Island) south to NJ, and from se. VA south to n. SC.

Taxonomy Comments: In the Fall-line Sandhills, where its range overlaps P. barbulata var. brevifolia, P. barbulata var. barbulata is limited to seepage areas or pocosin ecotones, while P. brevifolia occurs in xeric situations far upslope.
