Intro: Ascending to reclining perennial of fields, roadsides and other open, disturbed areas. Native of Europe.
Stems: Stems branching near the base, smooth to slightly downy, with a waxy coating.
Leaves: Leaves opposite, sessile or clasping, elliptic to oval and pointed at the tip, 3/4-3 in. long.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers in an open, branching panicle; white; 1/2-3/4 in. wide. Each flower consisting of 5 deeply notched petals; a smooth, greenish-pink, inflated calyx tube bearing 20 prominent veins and a network of secondary veins; and 10 protruding stamens and pistil.
Fruits: Fruit a capsule.
