Horticultural Information
Intro: Erect to spreading biennial of moist slopes, shaded roadsides and rocky forests. Native of Eurasia.
Stems: Stems ribbed, branched, blue-green to green, covered with long white hairs (at least near base); exudes orange-yellow sap when broken.
Leaves: Leaves basal and alternate on stem, to 8 in. long, deeply divided into 3-9 bluntly toothed/lobed leaflets, blue-green to green.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers 3-8 in flattish umbels on upper stem, yellow, about 3/4 in. wide, consisting of 4 broadly oval petals, a pair of narrow green sepals (these drop early) and numerous yellow stamens surrounding a stout green style, which elongates to rise above the stamens.
Fruits: Fruit an erect, slender, pod-like capsule.
Comments: The orange-yellow sap coming from broken stem and leaves can be very irritating to skin and eyes.
