Intro: Sprawling annual of fields, disturbed areas, draw-down zones on river and pond shores. Native of tropical America but now spread throughout most of N. America.

Stems: Stems prostrate and much-branched, forming mats; smooth.

Leaves: Leaves in whorls of 3-8, oblong-lance-shaped to linear, 1/3-1 in. long, smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers on stalks from leaf nodes, 2-5 per node; white; to 1/4 in. wide; consisting of 5 petal-like sepals (often with pale green lines), 3-5 white stamens; and a large green ovary with a 3-parted style.

Fruits: Fruit a capsule.
