Intro: Lanky biennial of rich forests and woodlands.

Stems: The first year, this plant produces only a rosette of basal leaves; in the second year a tall stem, branched above and rough-hairy is produced.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, sessile, oval to lance-shaped, 1½-8 in. long, with curving veins, dark green and with stiff hairs above, medium green and more densely hairy beneath.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in spreading, hairy racemes that branch off the stem and usually on one side of the raceme rachis; white to pale-blue; less than 1/4 in. wide, consisting of a short tube and 5 flat-spreading lobes.

Fruits: Fruit a brown, oval to round, bur-like nutlet covered with small barbs.
