Intro: Erect, rhizomatous perennial of marshes, bottomlands, ditches and any place with soils that are seasonally flooded but with drawdown during the growing season.

Stems: Stems 4-angled, with wings on the angles.

Leaves: Leaves opposite, on winged petioles or sessile, lance-shaped to oval, tapering at the base, 2-5 in. long (reduced upward), toothed, smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers solitary on stalks from upper leaf axils; pale violet or pink with a patch of yellow surrounded by a narrow band of white in the throat; about 1 in. long; bilaterally symmetric; tubular and opening to 2 unequal lips, the upper one erect and 2-lobed (each lobe often folded), the lower spreading and 3-lobed. A light green calyx tube is strongly 5-angled (winged) and has 5 short lobes.

Fruits: Fruit a capsule enclosed by the persistent calyx.
