Habitat: Mesic hardwood forests, streamside thickets. Distribution: A northern species predominantly of eastern Canada and the Great Lakes Region, east to NH; the var. asperifolia (Sargent) Kruschke is reported as disjunct for VA by Phipps (FNA9).
