Habitat: Dry soils of prairies, woodland openings, other clearings, and sandhills. Distribution: Ontario and Minnesota south to Texas and Louisiana.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: Primary branching often begins before vernal panicles mature. Var. villosissimum differs primarily by having a double ligule and spikelets 2.1-2.5 mm long. Absence of the double ligule is what places this in the D. acuminatum group key, and a member of that group may have had a role in this taxon’s origin.
