Astragalus pleianthus (Shinners) Isely. Phenology: Mar-May. Habitat: Blackland prairies, woodlands. Distribution: E. and c. Texas.
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Taxonomy Comments: This species is part of the A. nuttallianus “complex” and is often treated as a variety of that species (e.g., Barneby 1964; Correll & Johnston 1970; Diggs et al. 1999; Welsh 2023b). Isely (1998), however, considered it a separate species indicating that “though sympatric with several of its congeners, it seemingly does not blend with any of them.” Welsh (2023b) acknowledged that “justification exists for elevating this taxon to species.” See further discussion under A. nuttallianus.
