Zelkova

not marked as a favorite taxon *Zelkova serrata (Thunberg) Makino. Common name: Zelkova. Phenology: Apr-May. Habitat: Planted frequently for ornament, now spreading by seeding down. "The Asiatic Zelkova serrata is a tree that resembles an elm and is frequently planted as an alternative since it is highly resistant to Dutch Elm Disease. Planted trees are now producing seedlings and saplings in multiple locations, and it appears the species is on a trajectory to become more fully established, if not invasive" (Virginia Botanical Associates 2026). Distribution: Native of China, Japan, and Korea. An incipient invasive in much of our region.
