*Nandina domestica Thunberg. Common name: Nandina, Sacred-bamboo. Phenology: May-Jun; Oct-Nov. Habitat: Forests and woodlands in suburban areas, commonly planted, increasingly escaping and naturalizing. Distribution: Native of China. Nandina has numerous cultivated forms, and is widely planted, especially southward.
ID notes: Leaflet shape varies in cultivated forms from broadly ovate to linear. Cultivated forms with broader or narrower leaflet shapes, variegation, yellow or reddish leaflet color, nonplanar leaflets, etc. all appear to be weak out of cultivation, hence, naturalizing plants appear to be "wild type".
Origin/Endemic status: E. and se. Asia
