Erect annual of disturbed areas such as hedgerows, thickets and railroad cinders. Native of western North America.
Stems sparingly branched, light green or light reddish-green and sparsely to abundantly short-hairy.
Leaves opposite or alternate, widely spaced but crowded along upper stem, petiolate, lance-shaped to diamond-shaped (verging on oval), 3/4-3 in. long, coarsely toothed, lower surfaces lighter than upper and sometimes red-spotted, exuding milky sap when torn.
Flowers in compact, flat-topped terminal clusters (3/4-2 in. wide), each subtended by a few leaf-like bracts that are white or pinkish-red tinged; umbels contain a mixture of already ripening fruits and the yellowish, minute, cup-like structures containing female and male flowers, which lack petals and sepals.
Fruit a rounded, 3-lobed capsule.
