Taxonomy Comments: Names based on the epithet "hassleriana" are illegitimate; the basionym of that epithet, Cleome hassleriana Chodat 1898 is predated by the basionym for names based on "spinosa", Cleome spinosa Schlechtendal 1851. This species has been, moreover, been sometimes misidentified as Cleome spinosa Jacquin or Tarenaya spinosa (Jacquin) Rafinesque, which is a different taxon.
