not marked as a favorite taxon Nabalus cylindricus Small. Common name: Cylindrical Rattlesnake-root, Appalachian Rattlesnake-root. Phenology: Aug-Oct. Habitat: Mountain forests, grassy balds, at moderate to high elevations. Distribution: Sw. VA south to w. NC and e. TN.

ID notes: Fusiak & Schilling (1984) studied Prenanthes roanensis and related species. Additional characters (other than those explicitly used in the key above) useful in separating Nabalus roanensis (in the broad sense, including N. cylindricus) from Nabalus altissimus are: phyllary tips usually black (vs. usually green), flowers 5-8 per head (vs. 4-6), and inflorescence usually narrow and thyrsoid (vs. usually conspicuously branched).
