Cotinus

not marked as a favorite taxon Cotinus obovatus Rafinesque. Common name: American Smoketree. Phenology: Apr-May. Habitat: Glades, exposed bluffs, and dry upland woodlands over calcareous soils and rock outcrops. Distribution: Se. Tennessee (Cumberland Plateau) (Chester, Wofford, & Kral 1997), nw. Georgia, and n. Alabama west to Oklahoma and e. and sc. Texas.

ID notes: A small tree of limestone woodlands and glade margins, occasionally planted as an ornamental tree. The inflorescence often consists of mostly villous pedicels with the exception being those formed beneath mature drupes; these are conspicuous and aid in wind dispersal (Pell et al. 2024).
