Habitat: Dry rocky or shaly woodlands, forest edges, riverside scours and prairies. Distribution: Var. americana ranges from QC west to AK, south to w. VA, s. WV, MO, OK, TX, Mexico. The reports for AL (Woods & Diamond 2006) and w. NC (Kartesz 2020) are based on misidentifications.
