Floerkea proserpinacoides Willdenow. Common name: Floerkea, ‘False-mermaid’. Phenology: Apr-Jun. Habitat: Moist, rich floodplain forests and adjacent rich lower slopes. Distribution: NS and QC west to BC, south to n. VA, TN, and CA.

Intro: Sprawling to sub-erect annual of moist, rich floodplain forests and adjacent lower slopes.

Stems: Stems branched, somewhat succulent, smooth.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, long-petiolate, pinnately divided into 3-7 linear to elliptic leaflets or segments, which are also sometimes 2- to 3-times divided.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers solitary on long stalks from leaf axils; white; about 1/4 in. wide; consisting of 3 tiny petals, 3 green and lance-oval sepals, 6 stamens (usually) and a single style.

Fruits: Fruit a brown, tiny cluster of 1-3 achenes.
