Bursera simaruba (Linnaeus) Sargent. Common name: Gumbo-limbo, Gum-elemi, Turpentine-tree, 'West Indian Birch'. Phenology: Jan-Dec. Habitat: Coastal hammocks, rockland hammocks, shell middens, pine rocklands. Distribution: FL peninsula (from Volusia County on the east coast and Hillsborough County on the west coast, south to s. FL); West Indies; Mexico, Central and South America.
