Intro: Herbaceous annual vine of fields, hedgerows and disturbed areas. Native of tropical America.

Stems: Stems twining and smooth.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, petiolate, oval in outline, 2-4 in. long, pinnately divided into linear segments, giving the foliage a ferny appearance.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in long-stalked, axillary clusters of 1-3; scarlet; 3/4 in. wide; tubular with 5 spreading, triangular lobes at the opening making a 5-pointed star; white stamens and a style protrude from the tube.

Fruits: Fruit a round to oval capsule.
