Juncus brachycephalus (Engelmann) Buchenau. Subgenus: Juncus. Section: Ozophyllum. Common name: Small-headed Rush. Phenology: Jun-Sep. Habitat: Calcareous fens and seeps. Distribution: NS west to ND, south to MA, OH, IL, MO, AR, and OK; disjunct southward in VA, n. GA, TN, and CO (falsely reported for AL). See Knapp & Floden (2024) for details about the occurrence of this species in Arkansas and Missouri.
ID notes: Of section Ozophyllum (containing septate leaves), this species is conspicuous in having obtuse to acute outer tepals. Found only in calcareous wetlands.
