native range:
Juncus polycephalos Michaux. Subgenus: Juncus. Section: Iridifolii. Many-headed Rush. Phen: Jul-Sep. Hab: Sandy pond margins, ditches, pine savannas. Dist: Coastal Plain, NC to s. FL, west to e. TX; KS.
ID notes: Among all Juncus in the region, only J. paludosus and J. validus can be confused with J. polycephalos. The combination of incomplete leaf septae and capsules being united at the apex at maturity easily distinguish this robust taxon. Leaves beset with incomplete septa (i.e. not stretching across the leaf surface) which gives the leaves a wrinkled or seersucker look.
