Juncus polycephalos Michaux. Common name: Many-headed Rush. Phenology: Jul-Sep. Habitat: Sandy pond margins, ditches, pine savannas. Distribution: Coastal Plain, NC to s. FL, west to e. TX; KS.
ID notes: Among all Juncus in the region, only J. paludosus and J. validus can be confused with J. polycephalos. The combination of incomplete leaf septae and capsules being united at the apex at maturity easily distinguish this robust taxon. Leaves beset with incomplete septa (i.e. not stretching across the leaf surface) which gives the leaves a wrinkled or seersucker look.
Origin/Endemic status: Endemic
Taxonomy Comments: Although the genus name Juncus has a "-us" ending (indicating Latin), Michaux used the "-os" ending (Greek; masculine or feminine) for the specific epithet; his choice is not correctable.
