Dicentra canadensis (Goldie) Walpers. Common name: Squirrel Corn. Phenology: Apr-May; Jun. Habitat: Rich, moist forests, especially rich cove forests in the mountains. Distribution: S. ME west to s. MN, south to w. NC, n. GA, TN, and MO.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: An octoploid species (2n=64) (Hatcher 2019).

Flowers: Flowers dangling from a leafless stalk arched above the foliage; white; to ¾ in. long; bilaterally symmetric; tubular, with 2 upward projecting, rounded spurs--suggesting a heart-shape--and 2 small, spreading corolla lips at the bottom of the "heart"; fragrant.

Fruits: Fruit a green, narrowly oval, beaked capsule.

Comments: Plants arise from small, round, yellow tubers that resemble corn kernels.
