Actaea rubra (Aiton) Willdenow. Section: Actaea. Common name: Red Baneberry. Phenology: May-Jul; Aug-Oct. Habitat: Moist forests. Distribution: NL to AK, south to ec. NJ (Monmouth Co.), sc. PA (Rhoads & Klein 1993; Rhoads & Block 2007), OH, IN, IL, IA, ne. KS, NM, AZ, and CA.
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Taxonomy Comments: We here consider A. rubra not to be conspecific with Old World taxa to which it is related, thus giving Actaea rubra a strictly North American distribution. The distinction of ssp. rubra and ssp. arguta (or at species or varietal rank) may be warranted.
