Horticultural Information
Intro: Trailing to ascending perennial of road banks, woodland borders, fields, rocky stream sides and disturbed floodplains. Native of Europe that persists around (or spreads from) erosion-control plantings, sometimes spreading far, especially in alluvial habitats.
Stems: Stems occasionally branched, smooth to sparsely hairy, leaning on other plants for support.
Leaves: Leaves alternate; sessile and with a pair of tiny stipules at base; about 6 in. long; pinnately divided into 11-25 leaflets, each oblong in shape with bluntly rounded tip, about 3/4 in. long and smooth.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers in umbels (10-25 flowers each) on long stalks arising from upper leaf axils; pink or white; about 1/2 in. long; with typical pea-flower shape, including an upright "banner" petal that is often a darker shade of pink than the rest of the corolla.
Fruits: Fruit an erect, linear, 4-angled pod with 1-7 segments and a long, pointed beak.
