*Boehmeria nivea (Linnaeus) Gaudichaud-Beaupré. Common name: Ramie. Habitat: Disturbed suburban areas, waste ground. "In waste places, South Carolina and Florida and about the large cities in the Gulf States" (Small 1913a). Distribution: Native of Asia. Reported for Lowndes County, GA (Carter, Baker, & Morris 2009). Reported for VA based upon a (now rejected) specimen of B. cylindrica.

Origin/Endemic status: E. and se. Asia

Taxonomy Comments: Boehmeria nivea will be removed from Boehmeria, either to a monotypic genus, Ramium (or a replacement genus, see synonymy) or perhaps to be included in related genera, such as Sarcochlamys Gaudichaud, Archiboehmeria C.J. Chen, or Astrothalamus C.B. Robinson (all natives of se. Asia).

Other Comments: This plant has been cultivated for the fiber of its stems, which is extracted and used for fabric in a manner reminiscent of linen (which is made from stem fibers of Linum usitatissimum).

Synonymy : = FNA3, K4, NS, POWO, RAB, S13, Tx, WH3; Urtica nivea L. = n/a — G; = Ramium niveum (L.) Small — S, the genus name illegitimate. Basionym: Urtica nivea L. 1753
