*Agave desmetiana Jacobi. Common name: Dwarf Century-plant. Phenology: Feb-Jul. Habitat: Sandy soils in hammocks and along roadsides. Distribution: Native to Mexico, introduced in peninsular FL.
ID notes: It is a diminutive species with relatively short leaves, a short inflorescence, and short suckers.
Origin/Endemic status: Neotropics
Taxonomy Comments: The species may be an ancient cultivar, possibly derived from A. sisalana or A. kewensis and reproduces only by vegetative means; capsules and seeds have never been seen. In Mexico, it is grown only as an ornamental.
Other Comments: Gentry (1982) indicated that the plant produces a fine but weak fiber.
