Habitat: Rich coves, rocky slopes, metabasalt boulderfields, rich north-facing river bluffs, calcareous Coastal Plain ravines. Distribution: NB and MB south to e. VA, w. NC, and OK.
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Taxonomy Comments: In VA, var. americana occurs throughout the northern half of the state, with scattered populations southward in the mountains. Pigott (2012) recognizes two varieties within what is here treated as var. americana: a more narrowly circumscribed var. americana and var. neglecta.
