Horticultural Information

NCBG trait

Intro: Erect perennial of woodlands, rock outcrops, sandy barrens and fields.

Stems: Stems multiple, arising from horizontal elongate rootstock and wiry with short hairs pressed flat.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, petiolate, linear-spoon-shaped to oblong with narrow tapering base, 1/2-1 1/4 in. long, sparsely hairy above.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers long-stalked in terminal clusters of 2-6, yellow, about 1/2 in. long, consisting of 5 showy petals, 5 hairy sepals (2 narrow outer ones and 3 broader inner ones) and many orange-tipped stamens. Additional self-pollinating flowers produced later in the season on erect branches lack petals and are nearly sessile.

Fruits: Fruit an angular-oval capsule; capsules from self-pollinating flowers are smaller.

Comments: Rare.
