Eriogonum tomentosum Michaux. Common name: Sandhill Wild-buckwheat, Southern Wild-buckwheat, Dog-tongue. Phenology: Late Jul-Sep; Sep-Nov. Habitat: Longleaf pine sandhills, usually in white sand, primarily in the fall-line Sandhills and on riverine dunes in the middle and upper Coastal Plain. Distribution: S. NC (at least formerly) south to c. peninsular FL, west to s. AL. There seems no reason to doubt the label data of an 1890's Biltmore Herbarium collection from Bladen County, NC (Pittillo, Horton, & Herman 1972), as E. tomentosum is fairly common not far away in SC; the species has apparently not been seen in NC since.

Intro: Erect perennial of sandhill turkey oak scrub and longleaf pinelands, usually in white sand, primarily in the fall-line Sandhills area and on riverine dunes in the middle and upper Coastal Plain.
Stems: Stems branched above, densely hairy.
Leaves: Basal leaves numerous, in a rosette, petiolate (no ocrea at base of petiole), elliptic to oblong with rounded tips, to 4 3/4 in. long, dark green and smooth above, densely hairy (white or tan) beneath; stem leaves smaller in widely spaced whorls of 3-4.

Flowers: Flowers at branch ends in tight clusters of 10-20, stalks and bracts densely tan-hairy; white to pinkish-white; to 1/2 in. wide; bell-shaped when open; consisting of 6 petal-like sepals of 2 sizes and 9 pink stamens.
