Impatiens pallida Nuttall. Common name: Yellow Jewelweed, Yellow Touch-me-not, Pale Touch-me-not. Phenology: Jul-Sep. Habitat: Cove forests, streambanks, seepages, moist forests, bogs, roadsides. Distribution: NS and QC west to SK, south to e. VA, wc. NC, TN, WV, n. AR, and OK.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: A white form (f. speciosa) is occasionally encountered.

Intro: Upright to leaning annual of cove forests, other moist forests, stream banks, seepages, bogs and roadsides; can occur in dense stands.

Stems: Stems succulent-watery, branched above, glossy and smooth.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, petiolate, oval, to 4 in. long, with broadly toothed margins and soft grayish-green with a hairless, water-repellent surface.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers dangle on slender stalks from upper leaf axils; they are yellow (rarely creamy white), sometimes with reddish spots on the inside, 1-1 1/2 in. in. long, bilaterally symmetric and cornucopia-like, with a backward-pointing spur and 2 lips, the lower one larger and split into 2 lobes.

Fruits: Fruit a fleshy green capsule that explodes open, flinging turqouise-colored seeds.

Comments: Resembles I. capensis but with yellow flower that, overall, is larger but with a shorter spur.
