Potamogeton natans Linnaeus. Common name: Floating Pondweed, Floating Brownleaf. Phenology: Jun-Sep. Habitat: Lakes, ponds, and slow streams. Distribution: NL (Newfoundland) west to AK, south to e. WV, w. NC, KS, NM, AZ, and CA.
ID notes: The floating leaves of Potamogeton natans can be distinguished from P. nodosus by the presence of 17-37 veins (vs. 9-21 in P. nodosus).
