Stewartia

not marked as a favorite taxon Stewartia ovata (Cavanilles) Weatherby. Common name: Mountain Camellia, Mountain Stewartia. Phenology: Late Jun-Jul; Aug-Sep. Habitat: Mesic forests, especially along streams and on acidic bluffs, often in openings in rhododendron thickets (‘hells’), in the Coastal Plain of VA restricted to ravines. Distribution: Primarily Appalachian: e. Kentucky, sc. Virginia, e. Virginia south to c. North Carolina, w. South Carolina, e. and c. Tennessee to n. Georgia and n. Alabama, avoiding, however, the higher mountains, and extending into the Coastal Plain in e. Virginia. The species is most abundant in the Cumberland Plateau of s. Kentucky and Tennessee.
