Mitreola petiolata (J.F. Gmelin) Torrey & A. Gray. Common name: Caribbean Miterwort. Phenology: (May-) Jul-Sep; Sep-Nov. Habitat: Swamps, marshes, ditches, seepage areas on calcareous glades, other wet habitats. Distribution: Se. VA south to s. FL and west to AR and c. TX, north in the interior to nw. GA and c. and se. TN; Mexico; the West Indies; Central America (south to Guatemala).

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: Here interpreted more narrowly, excluding South American and Old World material (see Mathews 2023).

Stems: Stems somewhat 4-angled, branched above in inflorescence, smooth.

Leaves: Leaves opposite, petiolate, elliptic to oval and tapered at both ends, to 3 in. long.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers arranged along one side of ascending, terminal branches and in similar, smaller clusters from leaf axils, the branches slightly coiling at the tip; white, tiny, funnel-shaped with 5 spreading, pointy lobes.

Fruits: Fruit a tiny, deeply 2-lobed capsule.
