Matelea baldwiniana (Sweet) Woodson. Common name: White Spinypod. Phenology: Apr-Jul; (May-) Jun-Oct (-Dec). Habitat: Dry to mesic bluffs over calcareous rocks. Distribution: Panhandle FL and sw. GA west to MO, AR, OK, and TX (Singhurst & Holmes 2021). Verified for MS by John Kees (2022, pers.comm).
Origin/Endemic status: Endemic
Taxonomy Comments: Drapalik (1969) discussed the probability that the name M. baldwyniana is based on material of M. flavidula; this problem remains unaddressed. The spelling of the epithet must be corrected to 'baldwiniana'.
